When it comes to cleaning a bathroom, there are several necessary things you need to do. These tips will really make a difference.

cleaning a bathroom

Cleaning a bathroom is not everyone's idea of a fun time, but it's essential to a healthy and happy home. Your toilet alone houses over 50 bacteria per square inch. Think about everything else in your bathroom!

That musty smell in your bathroom could also be from mold, which could make you and your family sick. It would be best to deep clean your bathroom at least once a month. However, that may depend on other factors, like the size of the bathroom and the number of people in your household.

Regardless, these bathroom cleaning tips will help you get through it in no time. Read on to discover the best way to clean a bathroom.

1. Remove the Clutter

Cleaning a bathroom will be much more difficult if you have a bunch of bottles lying around. The first thing you want to do is to put aside your shampoo, conditioner, and toothbrush handles. Next, take out everything from the countertops and shelves so you can get every inch of your bathroom.

This is also a great time to wipe away soap suds accumulated on the bottles. You can use distilled white vinegar or anti-bacterial spray to clean them as you move them out of the room. Place these items somewhere they can dry so they won't get in the way while you clean.

2. Wash All the Linens

After removing the clutter, you also want to remove linens and put them through a good wash cycle. This includes bath mats, towels, rugs, and shower and window curtains. Towels and bathroom rugs absorb a lot of water and often don't have the opportunity to dry completely.

This creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, mold, and mildew. Studies show that shower curtains hold the most germs in the bathroom.

To clean a shower curtain, toss it in with your bathroom rug for a cold wash. You can do this for both fabric and synthetic shower curtains. Also, make it a habit to close the shower curtain after a bath so it can fully dry.

3. Vacuum the Surface Dust

Before you get anything wet, you first want to clear your bathroom of any dust particles and loose hair. Vacuuming will give you a clean slate to work on and ensure none of that dust will mix in with your shower cleaning products later.

Start by vacuuming the floors and get into all the corners of your bathroom.
Don't forget to vacuum the countertops and the insides of any shelves or cabinets in the bathroom. You can use a microfiber cloth on mirror frames and shower heads. It's also best to vacuum lighting fixtures and exhaust fans.

Most dust particles settle on the exhaust fan, especially in a moist bathroom. Loosen the buildup on the fan motor with a pencil before vacuuming.

4. Steam the Bathroom

Once you have a dust-free bathroom and your cleaning products prepared, turn the shower on. Let it steam for about 10 minutes before or after you apply any cleaning products. The steam will help your cleaning products penetrate any stubborn layers of dirt.

5. Wipe the Surfaces

Apply your bathroom tile cleaners and let them sit for a few minutes. You can also use any disinfectant spray or distilled white vinegar, and dish soap to clean the surfaces. Take this opportunity to wipe down your sinks, door knobs, and faucet handles.

Anything you touch, step or sit on must get a thorough cleaning. You never know where germs have made their home, especially in a bathroom where it's moist and humid.

Tricks for Cleaning Your Bathroom

6. Clean the Shower

The shower area is prone to a lot of soap suds and various buildup. First, get your walls wet to highlight any problem areas. Then, apply your preferred cleaning solution and let it sit for 10 minutes, allowing the buildup to break apart.

With an abrasive sponge, scrub the area until you've eliminated the grime. If your household uses hard water, you may need a bit of elbow grease to get rid of rust stains. Rinse the area when you're satisfied.

If you have shower doors instead of shower curtains, be sure to clean those too. Spray the doors with a cleaning solution and wipe them down until they're as good as new.

7. Clean the Toilet

Toilet cleaning solutions work best when undiluted. Start by reducing the water level in the bowl. Apply your cleaning solution under the rim and go in a circle.
This allows the cleaner to come down all corners of your toilet bowl.

Let the solution sit for at least 10 minutes to eliminate stubborn stains. Use a trusty toilet brush and scrub.

You can also use this time to scrub the toilet tank. A pumice stone or stick will be your best tool for removing stubborn buildup or stains in the bowl. Don't worry; it won't scratch your toilet.

When you're done, close the toilet lid and flush. Now, you can wipe down the exterior of your toilet, including the handle and seat hinges. Remember to disinfect your toilet brush after if you aren't using a disposable one.

8. Scrub the Floors

Any leftover dirt will fall to the floor, so it's best to save the floor for last. Start at the farthest corner from the door and spray a generous amount of your preferred cleaner. Grout can stain, so use a scrub to get into those tight corners.

If you want to save yourself some trouble when cleaning a bathroom, we recommend sealing your grout. Turn the shower on again and let the steam fill the room. Leave the bathroom and let it stay for about 20 minutes before finishing up with a mop.
