Did you know that falls accounted for 33% of non-fatal injuries in 2020? Shockingly, they were also responsible for 21% of deaths, and over one hundred of those occurred on the same level. Clearly, keeping your flooring in good condition is hugely important for everybody's well-being.

Floor cleaning is crucial to this aspect of workplace safety. You can't leave it to chance. You need to have a strict protocol in place to keep every floor in your business in excellent condition.

Join us as we explore seven handy tips for keeping business floors clean and safe.

1. Create a Culture of Cleanliness

Whether it's a factory, production facility, or office, everybody's busy. It's easy for workers to become so focused on their job that they develop some sloppy habits when it comes to keeping floors clean. It's easy to assume that someone will pick up afterward and that's 'not my job'.

In reality, cleaning is part of everyone's job. It's up to management to lead by example and develop a culture of cleanliness. This is an important component of the safety culture of your workplace.

Untidy workplaces are full of hazards. For example, packing materials left strewn over shiny concrete floors is an accident waiting to happen. The consequences can be serious for your business, leading to lost productivity.

Provide plenty of trash cans, cleaning supplies, and regular reminders. A little positive peer pressure is no bad thing in helping everyone to reach higher levels of cleanliness.

2. Make a Cleaning Plan and Stick to It!

Your cleaning crew needs to clearly understand the commercial floor cleaning strategy you use in your business.

The procedure should be in writing and every team member should have access to it. During the onboarding process, take time to train your workers to follow the routines. Start them off on the right track and then monitor their progress.

Sticking to a cleaning protocol protects you in several ways. First, it avoids cutting corners and taking risks. Using written logs is a great way to maintain accountability. Every employee should be empowered with the right training, tools, and products and then be expected to follow the protocol to the letter.

Doubtless, this will involve regular sweeping, vacuuming, and wet cleaning. Don't expect your cleaning crew to intuitively understand the right times to clean around your other employees. Give them set cleaning times and ensure everyone knows that these times need to be respected.

3. Use the Right Cleaning Equipment and Products

Providing your crew with the right cleaning materials will make their job so much easier.

Business floors comprise concrete floors, carpets, tile, and sometimes hardwoods. In the past, each of these floors needed a different type of cleaner. However, now there are excellent floor cleaners on the market like Ultimate Floor and More Cleaner.

This is a heavy-duty, commercial cleaning product that works great on wood, concrete, natural stone, tile, and even carpets as a spot cleaner. Its non-caustic, non-acidic, and all-natural. It's a tough degreaser, breaking down oil and grease, without damaging the floor surface.

Products like this are ideal for commercial floor cleaning because they have a variety of uses. Make a pH-neutral cleaner for general floor cleaning using 1 oz for 5 gallons of water. To use as a degreaser, add 3 oz to 1 gallon of water.

If you need a spot cleaner for carpets or other flooring materials, add 1-3 oz per quart of water, blot, and spot clean.

Depending on the size of your facility, a scrubber/dryer machine can be a great investment. They reduce cleaning times by drying the floor immediately, making them safe to walk on. They come in walk-behind and ride-on variants.

Also, invest in high-quality commercial vacuum cleaners. Schedule weekly vacuum cleaner maintenance and cleaning to keep them in great condition.

4. Install Floor Mats

Floors mats form a crucial part of your defense against dirt.

By placing them at all external entrances, you encourage people to wipe their feet as they enter. This can slow down the spread of dust and dirt to other parts of the building. Make sure that these entrance mats are thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis.

Some mats can be effectively cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. Most varieties will benefit from thorough cleaning with a pressure washer on a regular basis. Make sure that they are completely dry before putting them back in place.

5. Think Safety

In most workplace settings, it's not safe to clean floors while people are working.

The best practice is to schedule a time when each office or workspace will be cleaned. Many companies prefer their floor cleaning crew to come in out of hours to minimize disruption. If you're running a 24-hour production facility, this won't be possible.

Your cleaning crew needs to have the authority to close off areas for cleaning and only reopen them when dry. Good planning will ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum. Even if you use a scrubber/dryer machine, train janitors to check and spot dry any wet streaks or patches before reopening the area.

6. Schedule Regular Deep Cleans

Regular cleaning prevents dirt from building up. But you need to schedule regular, possibly quarterly, deep cleans to keep floor surfaces in great condition.

This involves moving furniture to clean areas that are normally hard to reach. You may also need to use advanced cleaning equipment, such as specialist carpet cleaning machines, to get the best results. Scheduling deep cleaning at the weekends is one way to minimize disruption.

7. Hire a Professional Cleaning Crew

One of the best floor cleaning tips we can give you is to hire a professional crew.

There are many hazards involved in cleaning. You need a well-trained team to tackle this important work. They need to work in line with OSHA standards and they play a crucial role in keeping the rest of your workers safe.

By working with a professional company, you get access to a crew that knows what they are doing. They will also provide supervision and ensure they are working in harmony with federal and state requirements.
